The game against Braunschweig turned: Darmstadt 98 extends the top of the table
Table leaders Darmstadt 98 showed no nervousness in the promotion race after being knocked out in the DFB Cup Round of 16 at Eintracht Frankfurt. The Hessians beat Eintracht Braunschweig 2-1 (0-0) and extended their lead over second-placed Hamburger SV to four points. In front of 16,342 supporters, Mathias Honsak and Phillip Tietz (90+3) scored the goals in the 82nd minute for the « Lilien », undefeated in 19 league matches. Manuel Wintzheimer (52nd) put Braunschweig, who finished the game outnumbered after a yellow-red card for Nathan de Medina (90’+7′), in the lead with a hand penalty.
In the first half, the Darmstadt team won more game, but could not take advantage of their chances. Christoph Zimmermann failed with a shot at Braunschweig goalkeeper Jasmin Fejzic, who saved after just under fifteen minutes from a double chance for Tietz and Honsak. Just before the break, Honsak only hit the crossbar, Marvin Mehlem’s next goal was disallowed due to a previous foul from the penalty taker.
The visitors took the lead shortly after the switch. After a handball from Zimmermann, Wintzheimer converted the penalty that was due. In the dramatic final stage, Honsak equalized with a header. Shortly after, according to the video (Site notre bureau spécialisé)age, referee Robert Kampka took over a penalty for Braunschweig. And when Tietz scored the winning goal, video evidence had to be sought before it was clear the shooter had not been offside – as originally decided. So Darmstadt clapped at the end.

0: 1 v St. Pauli – 1. FC Kaiserslautern misses the jump to third place
FC St. Pauli broke the strong streak of 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The promoted team, which was previously unbeaten in seven games, lost to Hamburg 0-1 (0-0). Due to the defeat in front of 29,456 fans at the sold-out Millerntor, Palatinate slipped to fifth place behind SC Paderborn. If they had won, they would have moved up to third place. The hosts, for whom Connor Metcalfe scored in the 72nd minute, celebrated their third victory in three games under new manager Fabian Hürzeler. St. Pauli remains in ninth place in the standings, but has increased its lead over the lower tiers.
Both teams started the game cautiously and largely neutralized each other. The hosts tried to overcome the well-organized Palatinate defense with long balls. However, the precision was lacking. Kaiserslautern gave the ball to the Hamburgers, but the desired switching moments remained rare.
So it only made sense that St. Pauli got the first big chance. In the 44th minute, Marcel Hartel failed with a header. A little later, Jackson Irvine places the ball next to the left post. These actions woke up the guests. In added time in the first half, Aaron Opoku tested Hamburg goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.
After the change, Hamburg remained the dominant team. After a few good chances, the opener and victory was the logical continuation. Kaiserslautern’s late efforts were no longer successful.
Fortuna Düsseldorf win with late goals against SV Sandhausen
Fortuna Düsseldorf consoled themselves with a 2-0 (0-0) victory against SV Sandhausen after the bitter cup defeat in Nuremberg. After a crushing superiority, Tim Oberdorf took the deserved advantage late in the game (85th minute). Three minutes after the brother of international Lena Oberdorf, Rouwen Hennings made the decision. Top scorer Dawid Kownacki was replaced very early on injury (18th).
Both teams were knocked out of the DFB Cup last week. After these disappointments Düsseldorf reacted much better and dominated the game for 90 minutes. Far too little has come from Sandhausen to get out of the relegation zone. With 19 points, coach Alois Schwartz’s team is now penultimate in the table. Düsseldorf remains sixth in the table with 32 points. The gap with the relegation rank is five points.
